AS AN INTERN, YOU’LL GET TO:
Cape Town is repeatedly voted one of the top tourist destinations in the world. This unique internship destination offers visitors beautiful landscapes, cultural sightseeing opportunities, fantastic leisure and sporting activities and plenty of sunshine for most of the year.
Interns live independently – but with full support from the African Impact team – in the coastal town of Fish Hoek, but will be able to travel and stay in Cape Town’s city center at weekends, depending on the availability of our accommodation in the city.
The Fish Hoek accommodation, which is exclusively for interns joining us at the head office, comprises of an apartment on Cape Town’s South Peninsula. It is located close to the beach, train station, and several restaurants, coffee shops and internet cafes. The apartment is a 15 minute drive from the office, which makes getting to work every day an easy feat using local public transport. It has two bedrooms with a great living area, one bathroom and a lovely kitchen area – all in a secure complex.
Weekends are usually a good time for tourist activities where you can enjoy the beach during the summer time as well as some really unique adventures such as cage shark diving, paragliding, kite-surfing and taking a wine tasting tour through Cape Town’s beautiful winelands. Enhance your career opportunities, make a difference in the community and experience the adventure of a lifetime as you embark on this South African internship program.
Your role will predominantly focus around supporting African Impact’s social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You will gain exposure to social media strategies, and get hands-on in planning, creating, scheduling and monitoring social media posts, using various different tools.
Interns also help to run promotions via web and social media platforms, as well as gain to Facebook Advertising (when applicable).
Interns will play a key role in content creation, including social media posts, videos, blogs and online newsletters that aim to generate new enquirers and promote volunteering on a global level. This will also include contributions to sales materials such as brochures and volunteering guides.
Extra Roles and Responsibilities
As part of the internship, you will learn about Google Adwords, as well as provide ad-hoc administration assistance. This can include the updating of online listings, edits to our websites, and compiling market research and reports.
Interns in Cape Town get the unique opportunity to visit Cape Town volunteer projects on a weekly/bi-weekly basis, and will often spend weekends living in their volunteer base in the city center. This is an amazing opportunity to give back to disadvantaged communities and gain exposure to what volunteering involves, which is essentially for your daily role in promoting it.
Cape Town has many iconic sites which makes for great photograph opportunities. Take a boat trip to Seal Island, visit the celebrated Robben Island and stand on the top of the world-renowned Table Mountain, reaching it either by foot or cable car. A convenient and fun way to see more of what the city has to offer is to take the Hop-on, Hop-off City Tour bus. You will also have a chance to do some shopping and enjoy fine dining at the V&A Waterfront or at one of the many local food markets.
You can hike up the magnificent Table Mountain, or take the cable car to the top. Once you have soaked in the breath-taking view, you can choose to abseil your way down. Surfing lessons, shark cage diving and sky-diving are also on many tourists bucket list, and Cape Town’s mountain ranges make for great mountain-biking too.
Beach and Sea Adventures:
Although the water may be just a little cold, Cape Town has plenty of beautiful beaches to visit, each with its own unique atmosphere. If you are really keen to explore the waters you can dive with the sharks or take a tour to Cape Town Point Peninsula where you will have a chance to swim with the penguins at Boulders Beach.
Cape Town has something for everyone. If you are not really a city slicker and prefer to discover what nature has to offer, you can experience an African Safari at Aquila Safari – a “Big 5” private game reserve with animals such as the lion and African elephant.
The Cape Point at the tip of the Cape Peninsula lies within a nature reserve within the Table Mountain National Park which is a World Heritage Site. Cape Point is a nature enthusiast’s paradise with many buck, baboons, Cape Mountain Zebras, birds and variety of flora and fauna unique to the area.
