For those seeking a different kind of tour and not afraid to roll up their sleeves and get messy, then why not indulge in an agricultural voluntary adventure to a small coffee farm based in Kinyui in Machakos County. Experience Rural Life and Coffee Farming in Kenya while you live like the locals and learn the culture of the Akamba People. The Akamba are the fifth largest tribe of the 42 tribes in Kenya and they were originally Long Distance Traders in the early centuries who used to engage in trade between the Kenyan Inland and the Kenya Coast.

Today, they are mostly engaged in farming and handicraft economic activities. Small scale Coffee Farmers do not earn much from their crop and your volunteering will positively impact the farmer of this small scale coffee farm by providing an extra sources of income through agricultural tourism to sustain the farm and daily needs. There is also a possibility to extend your volunteer program.

Day 1

ARRIVAL: Arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport where you will be met by representatives to transfer you to your hotel and relax.

Day 2

NAIROBI CITY TOUR: Check out of your hotel and have a brief Nairobi City Tour drive, explore famous Nairobi Cuisine of Nyama Choma and Ugali (Barbecue Beef and Corn Meal Cake), and later continue drive to Kithito Coffee Farm in Kinyui town in Machakos County for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Here you will meet the farmer/host family who will help you to settle in.

Day 3

Day 3 to Day 5: ACTIVITIES AT THE COFFEE FARM: Orientation about the Coffee Farm, the village at large, including their cultural background, population, income source etc. Once the orientations are through, you will now daily engage in various activities in the Coffee Farm depending on the crop season. Activities may range from participate in Planting New Coffee Trees, Pruning Coffee Bushes, Picking Ripe Coffee Beans, Sorting, Pulping, Washing, Sun Drying and Storing Coffee Beans in Warehouse. Other farming activities include volunteering in Tomatoes and Onion Vegetable Garden within the farm. The work will be supervised by the coffee farmer or an assistant and so you are not required to know anything in advance. If you have experience and knowledge in Agri-Business, you can share to improve the farming practices, production output and promote environmental conservation in the farm, you are very encouraged to share with the farmer or the assistant.

Day 6

HIKE UP TO NTHUI CLIFF AND KANZALU RANGES: You will enjoy an early morning hiking and picnic tour to Nthui Cliff and Kanzalu Ranges which are within the village area. This hike will take about 3 to 4 Hours to and from the destination. Hikers can enjoy view of village life, hiking trails, enchanting views of Yatta Plateau the longest lava flow in the world from Nthui Cliff as they take a picnic lunch, views of Machakos Town Hills, Views of Mount Kilimambogo (Buffalo Mountain), Views of Masinga Dam the largest man made dam in East and Central Africa as well engage in photo sessions for memories.

DEPARTURE DAY: At the end of the Coffee Farm Volunteer Tour, you will receive a certificate of appreciation from Kithito Coffee Farm and a free Traditional Akamba Handicraft Souvenir gift and then you will be transferred to the airport as per your departure flight.
